A very Useful Kitchen Knife/Utility Drawer
When I returned with my last batch of hand picked timber, I was lucky enough to get hold of some more exotic and rare 'brown oak'. That's really what inspired me to design and build this utility board with a removable drawer rather than shelf. It was particularly satisfying to include a little traditional joinery strength for the drawer dovetail joints, especially since they are visible from front and back.
The brown oak slab on top with lighter oak for the drawer is really a great combination. I really don't like using wood stains so what you see here is the natural wood grain shining through in all its glory.
I added a removable cutlery separator for the drawer which can also be used for other kitchen conveniences like potato peeler, garlic press, pizza cutter or just more knives. There's even a space for storing loose garlic and dried chillies at each end.
The drawer has solid oak slats with gaps between each that prevent crumbs and food waste from accumulating at the bottom of the drawer. The knife separator can be lifted out easily and replaced with a different separator section for customized drawer use.

You can see more photos on my Etsy shop here of the finished product where you can see more clearly how the drawer works.
The small oak wooden handle is another feature that can be swapped with different knobs to match other kitchen furniture. Talk to me about what you want and I'll build one just for you.

The brown oak you can see here on the table saw, was grown in Scotland and has great character with splashes of lighter oak.

I am also building a larger version of this with my last slab of brown oak. The larger drawer will have configurable separators so it can be adapted by the customer to store anything that fits.
